For example, before changing the two globe fixtures above a bathroom vanity, clear toiletries from the counter and dry the sink area. Put a towel on the counter for the globes and their retaining screws. Turn off the breaker because the lights share a confusing multi-switch panel, then confirm both fixtures are off. After the globes cool, use a stable step stool to inspect the retaining hardware and set it aside in the towel. If one globe is chipped or a socket looks heat-damaged, stop there and arrange qualified electrical help rather than continuing with the changeover.
Common mistakes are rushing while a bulb is still hot, removing a cover without supporting it, working from unstable furniture, and assuming a switched-off light has no power. Another mistake is treating visible damage as a minor inconvenience. Cracks, scorch marks, loose mounting, repeated tripping of a breaker, buzzing, or a burning smell are reasons to stop and contact a qualified electrician. If you are not comfortable identifying the circuit or safely reaching the fixture, leave that fixture for a professional.
